Shabana Mahmood delivers major immigration update in Commons speech

Live from the House of Commons where Shabana Mahmood is set to give a statement on immigration rules for legal migrants. The Home Secretary is due to make a statement to MPs outlining what is believed to be a significant u-turn for the government. She has previously taken a hard-line on the issue despite growing concerns from her own back bench and members of the Government. Ms Mahmood will set out changes on the length of time people will have to be in the UK before becoming eligible for permanent settlement. The measures have caused deep splits at the top of the Labour Government. Speculation has mounted that the most controversial proposals – including increasing the five-year wait for claiming indefinite leave to remain (ILR) by up to 10 years for foreign care workers – could be watered down in the wake of criticism from senior Labour figures.
