One company paid $500,000,000 for AI in one month.
More and more companies are realizing thatĀ AIĀ might not be worth its sky-high price tagāat least, not without limits. One company reportedly learned that the hard way, after its employees blew through $500 million in spending onĀ artificial intelligenceĀ in just one month.
An AI consultantĀ toldĀ AxiosĀ that one of their clients recently spent half a billion dollars in a month on Claude licenses fromĀ Anthropic. How did the company rack up such an insanely high bill? Its employees apparently had no limit on how many licenses they could use, leaving them free to splurge on as much Claude as possible.
That means expensiveĀ AI toolsĀ could be deployed for uses that humans could easily and quickly accomplish themselves, like checking the weather, as one CTO toldĀ AxiosĀ their employees were doing.
The cautionary tale quickly went viral on social media, with users marveling at how spending half a billion dollars on AI could even be possible. ā5 private jets. 2 superyachts. One whole island. Gone. Vaporized into tokens,āĀ one user reflected. āRest in peace to whoever had to send that invoice.ā
