How the Democrats’ historic night of wins unfolded | BBC News

The Democrats have won a blowout victory in the US midterm elections, winning the Senate and the House of Representatives, taking control of Congress for the rest of Donald Trump's presidency. In the Senate race, Republican strongholds have been toppled by the Democrats in Texas, Ohio and Kansas, which last elected a Democrat almost 100 years ago. Trump has congratulated the Democrats on a “good job” and acknowledged that gas prices hurt Republicans during the midterm races, saying people "didn't like it" when they had to pay more for fuel. The midterm elections happen mid-way through every 4-year presidential election cycle, giving Americans the chance to elect members of Congress, which is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
