Description
There has been a big break in the crackdown on transnational criminal gangs based in India; gangs accused of extortion, drug-trafficking, kidnapping and targeted killings – including the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., three years ago. Acting together, the RCMP and FBI arrested three people in B.C., 13 in the U.S., and one in Spain. Seven other accused men are already in prison in India, including the alleged leaders of criminal syndicates, who – from their prison cells – ordered violent crimes around the world, often targeting the Indian diaspora. As Jackson Proskow reports, the investigation has taken years, and the RCMP describe it as a big moment for public safety in Canada.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is at the annual NATO summit – this year in Ankara, Turkey. Already, Carney is talking up his plan – announced Monday – to buy up to a dozen new submarines for the Canadian Navy, touting the fact Canada has now officially met NATO's defence spending target. As he travels with the prime minister, our Mackenzie Gray shares the details.
Regarding the upcoming fleet of subs, they won’t actually be built in Canada, but Carney’s guarantee is that more than 100,000 jobs will be created here through manufacturing, maintenance and support. The German company chosen to manufacture them says it will generate more than $160 billion dollars for Canada’s economy. Heidi Petracek has a reality check on that.
Plus, while Senate of Canada is intended to be a “chamber of sober second thought,” whether it is has always been up for debate. Senators are appointed, not elected, and Tuesday saw Carney make his first picks. The prime minister appointed a Conservative MP from Quebec, a senior Liberal strategist, a cancer researcher from New Brunswick, and a Manitoban businesswoman. As Jillian Piper explains, Carney is taking a different approach than his predecessor.
