Global National: Aug. 9, 2026 | Evacuation zone expands as BC wildfires display extreme behaviour

The wildfires raging in B.C.’s Interior have forced more than 20,000 people from their homes and the province’s wildfire service says the Bald Range wildfire near Summerland is displaying extreme fire behaviour. Shifting winds could also fuel the flames. The RCMP are working to confirm at least one reported death and the province, which remains under a state of emergency, says there has been significant structural loss. The federal government is stepping in to provide shelter and accommodations as the evacuation zone expands. Sarah MacDonald reports. The Summerland, B.C., area is an agricultural hub in the Okanagan Valley, home to farms with livestock. Many animals need rescuing as the wildfires expand. Travis Persaud reports on the logistical challenge and the volunteers stepping up to help. Typhoon Dolphin has now made landfall on China’s east coast, with torrential rain and winds of more than 150/km/h. Hundreds of thousands of people have evacuated across eastern China and more than 1,300 flights have been cancelled. Some areas are expecting more than 400mm of rain over the next few days. Authorities are warning of extreme flooding and landslides. It’s been a summer of extreme weather across Canada and one Indigenous-led non-profit is helping First Nations to prepare for the worst.
