Description
Canada has taken its first step towards what could eventually be the purchase of next-generation stealth fighter jets.
The country will be the first observer nation in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) led by the U.K., Italy and Japan.
This as Canada’s plan to purchase a fleet of fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets remains under a federal review more than a year on. Prime Minister Mark Carney put the full order of 88 jets under review in March 2025 in response to the ongoing trade war started by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Global’s Redmond Shannon explains what being an GCAP observer means for Canada’s defence initiatives in the wake of trade tensions with the U.S.
