After years of renovation, we're starting a huge new project: laying traditional Portuguese granite calçadas, by hand, to create beautiful stone pathways and a front patio around our home in the mountains of Southern Portugal. With tons of locally sourced granite, an excavator reshaping the ground, drainage work, and a plumbing mystery to investigate before the paving can begin, this renovation is already turning into an adventure of its own. We're also preparing the exterior stone walls before winter, planning the next phases of our landscaping, and discovering just how much work goes into creating the storybook home we've dreamed of. And, as always, life on a renovation site doesn't go quite as planned! Along the way, we share a closer look at traditional Portuguese calçada paving, the importance of drainage around an old stone house, and the realities of renovating a historic watermill in Portugal.
