FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has dismissed the prospect of a run-off in the 2027 presidential election, declaring the Peter Obi "wave" dead and buried and describing Obi as a "dramatist" with nothing to offer. Speaking at his monthly media chat in Port Harcourt on Thursday, he also took aim at ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and questioned Rabiu Kwankwaso's pull in the North. A candidate needs the most votes and at least a quarter of the votes in two-thirds of the states to win outright.
Concurrently, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja nullified Atiku's presidential ticket on Thursday, in a suit filed by former ADC Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, sacking the David Mark-led leadership of the ADC and throwing the party's 2027 slate into doubt. The ADC says it will appeal, and Atiku's name remains on INEC's final list, with the election just over ten weeks away. Atiku's spokesman, Phrank Shaibu said the timing was "no coincidence," coming a day after a mammoth ADC rally in Sokoto.
Meanwhile, NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi said he was shocked by the judgment, warning in a post on X that the public needs certainty months before a general election and that opposition parties should be protected, not stamped out.
Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo declared that "justice may be slow, but it is always sure," accusing the David Mark-led leadership of hijacking the ADC without the approval of a mini national convention or the National Executive Committee.
Undeterred, Atiku and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi took the ADC campaign to Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, pledging to tackle insecurity and restore the fuel subsidy, and describing the 2027 election as a referendum on President Bola Tinubu's policies.
Amnesty International has condemned the violence against ADC campaign convoys in Kebbi State, saying footage it analysed shows armed gangs blocking roads, attacking vehicles and striking people with cutlasses. It says this follows similar attacks in Sokoto, and that suspected hoodlums wielding machetes also attacked Peter Obi's convoy in Calabar on Wednesday, smashing windscreens. The group blames the authorities for failing to ensure accountability.
A 2019 clip has since resurfaced of him warning, as spokesperson of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, that ballot box snatchers should be prepared to pay with their lives, and some users are asking whether this amounts to double standards.
Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu warned at the flag-off of Election Security Training in Abuja on Thursday that anyone caught intimidating voters will be dealt with. The police also cautioned against the destruction of campaign posters and billboards, describing it as political intolerance punishable by arrest and prosecution.
In Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah claimed ownership of the trending campaign chant "APC Ka Mma," meaning "APC is better" in Igbo, in a video from the party's state campaign flag-off on Thursday. Waving a broom on stage, he insisted he was the first to sing the jingle and that other parties have no copyright permission to use it, although the NDC has popularised it.
Grammy-nominated superstar, Davido and American gospel legend, Kirk Franklin have performed their new song "Hope In You."
Finally, celebrating Dr Reuben Abati, who turns 61 tomorrow. Born on November 7th, 1965 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, he graduated as valedictorian with a First Class degree from the University of Calabar in 1985 and earned his doctorate at the University of Ibadan. He rose to become Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Guardian Newspapers, served as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan from 2011, and now holds a mirror to the nation through his ThisDay column and The Morning Show on Arise News.
