Atiku Slams Tinubu’s 30-Day Fuel Discount+Rotimi Amaechi Says Tinubu’s Supporters Are Mad|OjyOkpe

The Federal Government has announced a thirty-day petrol discount at all NNPC filling stations, with Finance Minister, Taiwo Oyedele saying transporters will get first priority. The government is negotiating a price ceiling of 1,350 naira per litre, which the minister stressed is not a subsidy but an arrangement to sell petrol at cost. Nigerians are reacting, with critics noting that NNPC Retail operates just over 900 of the country's roughly 27,000 filling stations, so most motorists may not benefit directly. Meanwhile, ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar called the discount a panic-driven publicity stunt and election bait, asking what happens on Day 31. Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, he described it as a one-month deception to help the APC in 2027, and noted that his administration between 1999 and 2007 never removed fuel subsidy or raised taxes. Concurrently, Atiku's September 18th press conference in Abuja has resurfaced, in which he predicted that President Bola Tinubu would temporarily bring back fuel support before the 2027 election and remove it again after re-election, leaving Nigerians asking if the discount is exactly that. The Nigeria Labour Congress has given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum, starting today, to reduce petrol prices and begin renegotiating the national minimum wage. In a communiqué on Thursday, the union demanded petrol prices be returned to their 2024 level, along with tax relief for workers and immediate wage awards. ADC Vice-Presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi said at an ADC town hall in Edo State that only a mad man would vote for President Tinubu in 2027, and described the President's economic policies as reckless. The remark is expected to draw backlash from the President's camp. In Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo described the 2.5 million votes he promised President Tinubu as "non-negotiable" at a one million man march with the City Boy Movement in Benin City, a pledge some online users say ignores the state's bad roads, unemployment and insecurity. Works Minister, Dave Umahi has dismissed reports of a rift between him and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, telling a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday that the two remain in the same political family. His comments come amid APC concerns over Wike's Rainbow Coalition and its potential impact on Tinubu's re-election bid. In Sokoto State, terrorists killed humanitarian worker, Lydia Chinenye Nwankwo on Tuesday after opening fire on a vehicle carrying five humanitarian workers along the Kajiji-Shagari road, wounding two others. In Ekiti State, police officers are under investigation after a viral video showed them threatening a biker over his alleged refusal to pay 20,000 naira during a stop and search operation. The Commissioner of Police has ordered immediate disciplinary action. Also on policing, a video from Osogbo, Osun State shows a female police recruit in tears as instructors teach her how to fire a rifle, with some finding the clip funny and others criticising the forceful training style. In Lagos State, a man seated inside the open bonnet of a moving bus on the Third Mainland Bridge has left thousands of Nigerians shocked and amused, with many stressing that no situation justifies riding in or hanging from a moving vehicle.
